Pellet Stoves

Forge & Flame (formerly Harman and Quadra-Fire) and Lopi pellet stoves and inserts in Hayward, WI. Wood heat without splitting or stacking.

Pellet heat

Wood heat, without the wood pile

A pellet stove gives you most of what a wood stove gives you, minus the chainsaw. You fill a hopper, set a temperature, and it feeds itself. For a lot of people that is the difference between heating with wood and thinking about heating with wood.

They do need electricity to run the auger and the fans, so we usually talk through a small backup plan with anyone who is heating primarily with pellets. It is a short conversation and worth having before the first outage rather than during it.

  • Hoppers large enough to run through the night and then some
  • Thermostat control that holds a room at a number
  • Freestanding stoves and inserts for existing fireplaces
  • Vents out a side wall, so no full chimney needed
  • Yearly cleaning and service handled by our shop

How to choose

Pellet or wood? The honest comparison

We sell both, so we have no reason to push you either way. It comes down to how you want to spend your time.

Pellets cost money, wood costs work

A ton of pellets is a known price you pay once. A cord of wood is cheaper, or free if you have the trees, but it is cut, split, stacked, seasoned and carried. Neither is wrong. They are different currencies.

Pellets need electricity, wood does not

The auger and the fans run on power. In a long outage a pellet stove stops, which is why we talk through a small backup plan with anyone heating primarily on pellets. It is a short conversation, better had in September than in January.

Pellets hold a temperature, wood swings

A pellet stove on a thermostat keeps a room at a number. A wood stove is hot after loading and cooler by morning. If you like tending a fire, that is a feature. If you want to set it and forget it, pellets win.

Questions we get

Worth knowing before you buy

How often do I fill the hopper?
On the stoves we sell, a full hopper will normally run through the night and well into the next day at a moderate setting. In a cold snap on a high setting you may be filling daily. Hopper size varies by model, and it is one of the first things worth comparing on the floor.
How much cleaning does a pellet stove need?
More than a wood stove, and it matters. A quick clean of the burn pot every few days keeps it running properly, plus a full service once a season on the exhaust, fans and hopper. We do the annual service, and we would rather do it in September than get the call in December.
Where do I buy pellets around Hayward?
They are widely available locally through the heating season. Buying a season's worth early is usually cheaper and saves you hunting in February when everyone else has had the same idea.
Can a pellet stove go in an existing fireplace?
Yes. A pellet insert fits into a masonry fireplace opening and vents up the existing chimney with a liner. It is a good way to turn a fireplace that loses heat into one that produces it.
Do pellet stoves need a full chimney?
No, and that is part of the appeal. Most vent out a side wall with a short run of pipe, which makes them far easier to place than a wood stove in a house without an existing chimney.

The names you will see on the floor

We are an authorized dealer for each of these, which means parts, warranty work and service stay here rather than going back to a factory.

Come see one burning.

The showroom on Highway 63 has units running through the heating season. It is a lot easier to pick a stove when you can stand next to it.
